LONDON – A pharmaceutical company has agreed to sell a generic version of Viagra, the world’s second-biggest prescription drug, in Britain, the first time the UK has approved it.
The deal follows the first such announcement in 50 years as an after-shave pack of Viagra.
Viagra is the first oral medication to treat erectile dysfunction. It is the first drug for that has proven to be an effective and safe way to get an erection.
The first patent for the new drug, called sildenafil citrate, expires on November 5.
British patent for sildenafil expires on March 1, 2023, but the medicine is still available in other strengths, the first drug approved in the UK since Viagra was introduced.
The British patent for the brand-name drug has expired, making sildenafil the only drug in the market that can legally be sold in the UK and the rest of the world.
Viagra, the first drug for erectile dysfunction to receive U. S. marketing approval, is the world's second-biggest prescription drug, having lost its U. patent protection in 2012.
Last week, Pfizer, the company that makes Viagra, announced that it would lose the patent on its generic version, which is due to be sold in the U. in 2023.
The loss of the patent, which was due to expire in six months, means Viagra will soon be made available to the general public without a prescription.

Pfizer has been buying the drug from eDrugstore.com, the UK’s leading online prescription drug service. The transaction will pay for itself by focusing on eDrugstore’s growing portfolio of prescription drugs and offering a wide range of their products at competitive prices.
The agreement marks a significant change from the traditional way Pfizer operated, where Pfizer operated a business, it is now known as eDrugstore, which was formed in 2018 to provide a growing portfolio of prescription drugs. It has expanded its product line to include a wide range of its brands, from high blood pressure and heart disease to allergies and even fertility treatments.
eDrugstore is the world’s eighth-largest pharmacy and distribution company with $30bn in revenue in 2018, with $37bn of that invested in healthcare.
